Westbrook grabs distinction as ‘Wild Thing’

By throwing four wild pitches Monday, Jake Westbrook tied a Indians franchise record that had been done three times before.

Sam McDowell was the first to do it, in 1961. He did it again three years later, and Steve Hargan heaved four wild pitches in 1965.

GIVING THANKS — Nothing wrong with starting the season by being thankful.

”I’m thankful I’m alive and for everything I have,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. ”I’m lucky to have the chance to win or lose a major-league game. I could be managing in an independent league.”

IT’S BEEN A WHILE — This is the 70th anniversary of the only Opening Day no-hitter in history.

Bob Feller achieved the feat on April 16, 1940, against the Chicago White Sox. Feller, now 91, attended Monday’s game and will be honored at a lunch today in downtown Chicago. Feller’s sister, Marguerite, who lives in metro Chicago and watched her borther’s no-hitter, also will be at today’s lunch.

Wedge meets with players to refocus

Clubs that have been out of contention since June aren’t usually called together for team meetings in mid-September.

But Tribe manager Eric Wedge, who is not exactly leading the league in job security these days, felt it was important to speak with his players before Monday’s series opener with the Twins.

Until recently, Wedge’s Indians had been putting together a strong second half, playing their best baseball after of a rash of July trades that completely reshaped the roster. But the Indians entered this three-game series — a series that continues Tuesday night at the Metrodome — having lost 10 of 13 and 11 of 15. A rookie-laden roster had begun to look like, well, a rookie-laden roster.
